Hedge and Shrub Trimming
Hedge and Shrub Trimming
Conifers provide exceptional privacy but can be difficult to trim. They can be unforgiving when pruning back hard and will likely require an arborist if very tall. They don't need trimming too often but must be done regularly enough as you may find branches die if trimmed too late. Without ideal growing conditions, Conifers standing in rows many not grow evenly
Viburnum are a large leafed fast growing hedge, very forgiving to hard pruning and can bounce back quickly even after being lopped completely. This is the easiest hedge along with Murraya to maintain. However, they will require attention 3-6 times per year so don't let it grow out of control!
Murraya are a glossy leafed white flowering hedge and are very commonly seen in Sydney. They're easy to trim and don't mind being cut back hard, they can be shaped in many ways and don't need as much attention as Viburnum. Regular trimming of Murraya will encourage thick foliage and keep them from getting too large
Red Robin are a colourful alternative to Viburnum and Murraya, their new leaves grow in a vibrant red and slowly change to green as they mature. It is recommended to trim the leaves as they change colour to ensure the shape and size is maintained but you'll only need to do it 2-4 times per year and they respond well to hard prunes
Buxus/English Box are a thick shrub, they allow for very unique shapes and perfectly square or round hedging up to 1 meter in height. Buxus does not respond well to hard pruning, must be trimmed before the new leaves begin to mature and if left too long before reshaping/trimming can cause sparse foliage while it attempts to recover. Growing these can take many years and the shape must be guided until the desired size has been reached
Duranta are a yellow/green leafed shrub, and sometimes have a small spine on the branches, It's very fast growing and can be shaped in all sorts of ways and is especially good at adding extra colour to the garden
